3/4 Passion Projects

3/4 Water Projects

As part of our Inquiry unit, ‘How Can I Be Water Wise?’, the 3/4 students chose a water-related topic to research as part of a homework passion project. They were given 6 weeks to complete their presentation and were able to choose how they presented their information. We invited our families to come along and watch our presentations and asked that they bring along a donation for Caritas Australia. We raised a total of $97 which will be donated to ‘The Community Managed Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Program’. The money we have raised will go towards ensuring access to safe drinking water and promoting good sanitation and hygiene practices in rural communities in Bangladesh. You can read all about it here.

3/4 Excursion to the Werribee Western Water Treatment Plant

On Thursday the 5th of November, the 3/4 classes traveled to Werribee to explore the Western Water Treatment Plant. The purpose of the excursion was to learn about where our water goes once it has been used and the process our waste water goes through to become recycled water.

The students completed three activities:

1. Story time- Students listened to a story that begins with a fresh water stream. This stream was represented by a bowl of clean water. As the story goes on, each student played the part of a character who dumps something into the water. By the end of the story the fresh water stream (and our bowl of water) no longer looks so clean, fresh and healthy.

2. Exploring water systems in our city- The students viewed a large map of Melbourne and were given the task of locating our school. Once we found our school, we needed to locate the drain water pipes and nearest creeks and major lakes.

3. The Water Treatment Process – The students were taken by bus to tour the water treatment plant. They viewed the ten different ponds that the water travels through, beginning as waste water and ending as recycled water.

The students had a wonderful time and found it very informative!

Famous Scientists

As part of our science unit this term we have been looking at famous scientist and inventors who have made important contributions to our world. Some of the scientists we have looked at are Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, Stephen Hawking, Jane Goodall, Sir Isaac Newton, Ernest Rutherford and Galileo Galilei.
The students have enjoyed researching their scientist and creating a poster on Google Drawing. Have a look below at some of the posters we created!

Animations

The 3/4 students have been using an online program to create animations in ICT. The program requires them to make small changes to their picture and take a snapshot of the screen, just like they do in the movies! This required a lot of time and patience.

Have a look at one that was made by Elena in 3/4C. Click on the picture and watch the animation come to life!

School Wide Positive Behaviour

The launch of the ‘School Wide Positive Behaviour’ program was a big success on Monday 20th of July. There was a lot of buzz (excuse the pun) in the school about the new bee stamp reward system. The students did a wonderful job of designing a bee mascot to support our 3Bs: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe. The students also wrote some lovely stories of a bee showing good values.
A copy of the bee matrix has been sent home to families as many of the behaviour expectations are also suitable for the home. This is a great opportunity for the school to work in partnership with families and we appreciate the support we have already been given, and the positive feedback we have received.
Since the launch of the program, the staff have commented that students are making great efforts to use their manners, to listen respectfully, tidy the playground and include others in their play. What a great start! We look forward to continuing this program and seeing the smiles on the students faces when they receive an acknowledgment for their positive behaviour.

3/4H Class Mass

On Thursday 28th, May, 3/4H celebrated their class mass. This was an opportunity for the students to reflect on and share their learning about the Holy Spirit and Pentecost Sunday. The children read well and sang beautifully. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare the students and joined us on the day.
