5/6H visit to meet Hugo our sponsored giant tortoise

On our way to camp tomorrow 5/6H will be stopping in to The Ballarat Wildlife Park to visit Hugo, the giant tortoise that the class (and Mr Thomas) sponsor. We are very much looking forward to meeting him and will add photos when we get back. If any other classes are interested in sponsoring an animal, the cost of sponsorship starts at $50 a year and is very valuable in helping look after the wildlife park’s many animals. Visit their website for more information: .

RE assembly with Margaret Fyfe from Caritas as our guest

The 5/6s ran the RE assembly this morning to share their reflections about Caritas day, thank the rest of the school for their support and present Margaret Fyfe from Caritas with a cheque for over $1100. It was fantastic that Margaret could come along, to not only accept the cheque but to share more information about Caritas and it’s current initiatives. Margaret also presented the school with a special candle and Certificate of Appreciation  It was wonderful to have Nicholas Moran share information with the school about how we can help raise money for Koala Kids, an organisation which helps to support children who are sick in hospital with cancer, great work Nicholas.

ANZAC Day Service at Templestowe Memorial Park

On Thursday 23rd April, Mr Thomas and myself took 18 respectful and reverent school leaders to Templestowe Memorial park to observe the annual Manningham ANZAC Day service. It was a fitting dedication to all the fallen service men and women who risked their lives for us 100 years ago so that we can live in this safe and peaceful country. Some of the reflections from the students showed how touched they were to attend such a special and solemn occasion. Well done to all the school leaders who represented St Charles so beautifully on the day!

The 1/2s and the 3/4s enjoyed running on the oval last week. The Preps ran in the hall. I was very impressed by the effort shown by all students. After running his 50 metre sprint, Michael B. asked if he could run around the oval. He did 4 laps! Definitely a future cross country star for St. Charles.

5/6 Caritas Day

Cakestall 1 Cakestall 3

Last Friday, the 17th of April the 5/6s ran a Caritas Day to provide education to students about the Caritas ‘Food For Life’ initiative and the importance of eating healthy food, as well as raising money to donate to Caritas. The 5/6 students all worked very hard to put the day together and did a fantastic job. 5/6C provided students with education about Caritas and ran fun activities, 5/6I ran a fun and lively restaurant where students could make their own tacos, while they danced and had lots of fun and 5/6H ran food stalls, including tasty smoothies, healthy fruit kebabs and delicious home baked goods. The day was a success and lots of fun, raising over $1100.00 for Caritas. Thank you so much to all of the other classes for supporting our day so enthusiastically :)!

Phys Ed (5/6)

imageGreat effort in 5/6 as we all had a go at the Beep Test  last week (Me included). It was fantastic to see the level of fitness demonstrated.

We also began having a look at AFL football ball skills and setting personal goals. It was great seeing the 5/6s on the oval focused and assisting each other on different skills.

Wall of Poppies

Poppy Wall 1

Students contributed to a Wall of Poppies (outside 5/6C & 5/6H) as part of our ANZAC Day commemoration. What makes this collaborative piece of art look so effective is that the poppies are made from various techniques and textures. Each class attached a prayer to the white crosses that also form part of the display.

Introducing seven!

This week in prep we have been learning all about the number 7. We can show seven on a tens frame, draw a picture of 7 things and write the number before and after 7. We made a flower to record our learning! We have also been investigating different ways of making 7. We used ladybugs and counters to help us write number sentences, such as 4+3=7.

TeamVic Trials

Team VicCongratulations to Daniel P (5/6C) who has been invited to participate in the TeamVic trials for basketball. TeamVic is a programme for elite athletes and the trials are conducted to select a team to represent the state at the annual School Sport Australia (SSA) Championships.

We wish Daniel all the best with this.
